It’s My Legs – Why Handling Wheelchairs With Care Matters
At Aviation Services UK, one of our core commitments is to ensure that passengers using mobility aids travel with dignity, safety and confidence. In support of this, the DfT has produced a powerful training film entitled “It’s My Legs – Why Handling Wheelchairs With Care Matters”.
This video reminds us that to many passengers their wheelchair or powered-aid is far more than equipment: it *is* their legs, their freedom, their independence. The film uses real-life experience and practical scenarios to highlight how damage, mishandling or delays in mobility equipment can have profound personal and emotional consequences.
By embedding this message across our industry, from airports and airlines to ground-handling teams, we reinforce our shared responsibility: to treat mobility aids with care, to ask the passenger for instructions, to handle each step of the journey thoughtfully and respectfully. This training forms a key part of best practice in accessibility and sits alongside guidance such as the DfT’s “Powered Wheelchairs: Guidance for Ground Handlers”.
We encourage all our colleagues, partners and contractors to engage with this film and its lessons.
